Joel’s iTunes Playlist — Mid-November 2008: A list of some things I am listening to these days.
- CHASE & STATUS. This London duo has putting out quality drum & bass since I first knew about them on Bingo Beats, DJ Zinc‘s label. They’ve had a few hot singles this year, Hurt You, Take Me Away, as well as an amazing Radio 1 Essential Mix — culminating in the album they just released on Andy C‘s Ram Records, More Than a Lot. Fantastic album that leads with the heavy single Pieces, and will no-doubt have a slew of equally impressive remixes to follow.
- A-TRAK. Montreal DMC winning DJ, who is also the younger brother of Dave One from Chromeo. A-Trak boosted his profile when Kanye West picked him to be his touring DJ. He has been a favorite of mine since I first heard Dirty South Dance last summer, a stunning mash-up of current hip-hop and electronic music. He most recently put out a mix for Nike + called Running Man which featured his new single out on Kitsuné Music — Say Whoa.
- COMPUTER CLUB. First known to me as Gigantor from drum & bass powerhouse Evol Intent, Computer Club seems to be his electro-house pseudonym. I first found his mix for No Love Lost Records this summer, which had an amazing tracklist, including some special remixes done by Computer Club himself — Sometimes by Les Rhythmes Digitales, Flat Beat by Mr. Oizo, and That’s What I Get by Nine Inch Nails all stand-outs. His new mix promoting the annual Nocturnal Party outside of Los Angeles (which I attended in 2004!) is equally amazing. The remix of Level 42’s 1980s hit Something About You by Hatiras, Green Light (MSTRKRFT Remix) by John Legend + Andre 3000 and The Messiah (a remix-of-sorts of Kemal & Rob Data’s drum & bass classic) by LA’s Le Castle Vania & Computer Club showcase his ability to mix future-thinking music.
- LADYHAWKE. From the Australian label Modular comes another artist to their already outstanding roster. Responsible for breaking such acts State-side as Cut Copy, New Young Pony Club, Van She and The Presets, Modular brings us another gem. Her debut album is solid and the first 2 singles, Dusk to Dawn and Paris is Burning, feature great remixes across electronic music’s stars and rising acts — Van She Tech, Chicken Lips, Canyons amongst others.
