Being that we would be in California for Valentine’s Day we decided to make it special. My parents, Joel and I made our way to one of my favorite restaurants in the world, Cyrus.
To start — some of their amazing cocktails made from fresh, local ingredients such as Meyer lemons and blood oranges. Along with drinks, we were served a tower of amuse-bouches meant to enlighten all 5 of our senses. Needless to say, the night was looking good!
We all went for the tasting menu with a few varying courses around the table. One course we were all served was the Thai Marinated Lobster with Avocado, Mango and Hearts of Palm. It was one of the best entrees I have ever tried: the lobster was so delicate, not chewy. The accompanying pesto was refreshingly light and when combined with the fresh mango and avocado — it was perfection!
Other standouts, although hard to chose, were: Seared Foie Gras with Pineapple and Pain Perdu, Black Bass with Bacon Braised Cabbage (topped with Pork Belly! — oh so good) and of course, the desert. We had two choices: First, Taramisu served alongside a Cappuccino ‘Spoon’, Caramalized Fennel and Espresso Gelato. The second choice, and overall favorite was Five Spice ‘Layer Cake’ with Passionfruit, and Thai Basil-Coconut Milk Gelato.
To end the meal, Cyrus serves Mignardises — bite sized, in-house created confections. Amongst other choices, we all went for the Peanut Butter and Jelly filled chocolates which seemed to be the overall winner of the evening.
Never disappointed, we rolled ourselves out of Cyrus having had some of the best food and wine you can find in America. It was a very special start to the spectacluar weekend.
