Aside from the friendliness of everyone in Hong Kong so far, the best part is all of the hiking and outdoor activities. This weekend we combined both by accepting an invite to bike the New Territories with new friends.
We met on HK Island side, but bused it over to Kowloon then took the MTR deep into the New Territories. By ‘deep into’, I mean 4 stops away from the border of China. It was crazy to think that we spent a casual Saturday biking alongside China. NBD.
The biking began through the city and despite what we think of the Asian drivers, they were quite respectful of all the bikers.
Up many, many hills we
walked biked and ended up at Brides Pool, an exceptionally beautiful waterfall in the middle of the forest. The fire in my legs and sweltering heat was worth it when we jumped into the cold water and sat amongst the waterfall and fish. Just phenomenal to think that only a few hours before, we were in a major metropolis.
The one thing we were not prepared for – serious biking. Joel and I rolled up in jean shorts and tank/polo. I wore my bathing suit under my clothes and not a proper sports bra as I’d later find out was more appropriate. But aside from that, it was a great time.
*Note to future biking self: buy a backpack and biking shorts. Be that person and you’ll be much happier on a bike for 8 hours. Also, work out your legs more often so you can actually walk the next day.
